This image replaces an unfiltered 125 minute sequence from 01/19/2006. This rich little open cluster forms a close pair with M 35 (centered about 26 minutes NNE). From the NGC / IC Project: Contemporary Visual Observation(s) for NGC 2158 NGC 2158 = Mel 40 = Cr 81 06 07 26 +24 05.8 V = 8.6; Size 5 17.5": 30-35 stars resolved, unusually rich, compact, about 5' diameter. The appearance is similar to a resolved globular cluster. Located 30' SW of M35. 13": ~15-20 stars, mottled clump near SE edge. 8": few stars resolved over haze. Discovered by WH (VI 17). Listed as a globular in the RNGC. This is an old open cluster (> 1 billion years old). - by Steve Gottlieb |
