Notes: NGC 4565 is the prototype for on-edge galaxies. *This image was started the night after my cooling fan on the ST-8 had stopped working ... -10c is the best temperature I could maintain. When I got a new fan from SBIG about a week later, I had already taken most of this sequence.  On May first I re-imaged the last 12 images from the sequence from the night of 04/13 at -15c.

The small galaxy to the SSW of NGC 4565 is NGC 4562 (2.5'x0.7', mag 14.0p, Cl: SB(s)dm: sp).

17.5": bright, very large, edge-on 12:1 NW-SE, dimensions approximately 
16'x1.5'.  A beautiful dark lane is visible continuously with direct vision 
along most of major axis although more prominent in the center.  The galaxy is 
split asymmetrically by the dust lane with the southern half both larger and 
brighter.  There is subtle scalloped structure visible along the dust lane.  
Contains a small bright core with a stellar nucleus at the south edge of the 
lane.  A mag 13.5 star is 1.6' NE of the center.

13": a faint dark lane splits central bulge into two unequal parts.  The nucleus 
is brightest to the south of the lane.  The northern section beyond the lane is 
fainter.

17.5": faint, small, elongated SW-NE, low even surface brightness, visible with 
direct vision.  Elongated at a right angle to N4565 13' NE.  Located just S of a 
string of five mag 10-12.5 stars of length 11' oriented N-S.
